Mongolia-Italy

Bilateral relations between Mongolia and Italy came from very ancient time. But contemporary official relations between the two countries have started from when two countries have established diplomatic relations in 1970. The initiative to establish diplomatic relations was made at first by the Italian side during the visit of Italian Deputy Foreign Minister to Mongolia in 1966.

Bilateral relations between the two countries have been developing smoothly in political, economic and social fields since 1990. To have mutual frequent exchanges of high level visits between Mongolia and Italy, from the Mongolian side, chronically in 1991 the Deputy Prime Minister, in 1993 the Minister for Foreign Affairs, in 1995 the Minsiter for Trade and Industry, in 1996 the Prime Minister, in 1998 the Minister for Infrastructure, in 2000 the President of Mongolia as well as in 2003 the Chairman of the State Great Khural (Parliament) of Mongolia paid visit to Italy. From the Italian side, in 2000 the Deputy Minister for Industry and trade and Deputy Foreign Minister of Italy paid visit to Mongolia in 2003.

The trade relations between the two countries started in 1973. Regarding the composition of the bilateral trade, Mongolia has been importing machinary, equipments, spare parts, foods, shoes and other clothes and exporting raw materials such as hides and furs and wool and cashmere.

In a view to create a legal environment for the bilateral relations, a range of cooperation agreements have been established between the two countries such as Agreement on Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investment (1993) and Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation (1996).

The two countries have been maintaining broad cultural cooperation under the Joint cultural cooperation plan 2005-2006 by sending circus-performers, artists of Mongolian folk song and dance as well as classic art, and trainings for opera singers to Italy and mutually organizing exhibitions. In this respect, Mongolian-Italian Friendship Association which was established in 1990 in Ulaanbaatar, Italian-Mongolian Friendship Society in Trieste and “Soyombo” Friendship Association in Milan have made significant contribution.
