• 53-rd General Conference of IAEA was held in Vienna on 14-18 September. The 10-member Mongolian delegation was headed by Mr. Sodnom ENKHBAT, Director-General of the Nuclear Energy (NEA) of Mongolia. It also included Resident Representative of Mongolia to IAEA Amb. Jargalsaikhan ENKHSAIKHAN, Ms. Jadambaa TSOLMON, Vice-Minister for Health, representatives of the NEA and the National Cancer Center (NCC) and diplomatic representatives of the Permanent Mission of Mongolia to IAEA.
• On the first day Mongolia was elected Vice-President of the Conference and served as such participating in the meetings of the General Committee and chairing some the Conference’s plenary meetings.
• On 15 September Mr. S. Enkhbat made a statement in the general debate of the Conference in which he informed the delegates of the measures taken by Mongolia to promote peaceful application of nuclear energy, including adoption of State policy on the exploitation of radioactive minerals and nuclear energy, Action Plan on utilization of uranium as well as a Nuclear Energy Law (the text of the statement can be found at …..)
• During the Conference the Mongolian delegation held bilateral meetings with the delegations of Jordan, Namibia, India. Vice Minister for Health J. Tsolmon participated in the briefing of PACT (Program of Action for Cancer Therapy) and made a presentation on the state of cancer in Mongolia and the measures that being taken to prevent, early detect, diagnose and treat cancer as well as to provide palliative care. The Vice Minister held meetings at OFID (OPEC Fund for International Development), Austrian Children’s Cancer Research Institute, VAMED (global healthcare organization).
• The Mongolian delegation held meetings with representatives of the Department of Technical Cooperation and of Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications and called on Dr. Mohamed El-Baradei, Director-General and Amb. Yukio Amano, Director-General elect of the Agency.
• Amb. J. Enkhsaikhan, Resident Representative of Mongolia, met with Amb. Susan F. Burk, Special Representative of U.S. President for Nuclear Nonproliferation and exchanged views on preparations for the 2010 NPT Review Conference.
• On 17 September Mongolia was elected to the Board of Governors of IAEA for 2009-2011. The Board of Governors examines and makes recommendations to the General Conference regarding IAEA´s accounts and programmes, approves safeguards agreements and publication of the IAEA´s safety standards. It also performs other functions between conferences. The Board consists of 35 members.
