Ms. Rana Flowers, UN Resident Coordinator à.i. and UNICEF Representative in Mongolia, reported that UN organizations joined to implement a project worth USD18 million for herders who lost livestock and remained without any livestock due to the dzud disaster in the winter of 2009-2010.
She made the announcement On May 14 during a meeting with M.Enkhbold, Mongolia’s Deputy Prime Minister and head of State Emergency Commission.
Within frames of the project, it was planned to render health services, foods and first-stage aid, to help herders overcome the disaster and support education and agricultural sectors.
Ms. Flowers underlined that conditions were set to receive assistance from the UN as a result of early warnings by the Mongolian government and State Emergency Commission about forthcoming situations.
Deputy Prime Minister M. Enkhbold thanked Ms. Flowers personally and on behalf of Mongolian government for the valuable contribution to assist dzud-hit herders. He expressed his confidence that the UN project, implemented in collaboration with the government and State Emergency Commission, will have effective results and the sides will be jointly implementing many projects and programs.
As of May 14, 8.1 million livestock perished throughout the nation.
