Evidence-based trade policy, not dreams
24 June 2010

On June 23-25, a high-level multistakeholder seminar on evidence-based trade policy and negotiation tools for Mongolia’s accession to the Asiapacific trade agreement (APTA) started in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Asia-pacific trade agreement’s aim is to promote economic development and cooperation through the adoption of mutually beneficial trade liberalization measures. APTA is open to all developing members of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, which serves as the APTA Secretariat.

PM S.Batbold cautioned stakeholders to be realistic about trade policy

Prime Minister S.Batbold gave a speech at the seminar. He thanked the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific for organizing the seminar together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and pointed out that in order to enlist to the Asia-pacific trade agreement, the principle of Mongolia’s decision should based on real evidence and fact.

The PM said: “In order to bring Mongolia’s democracy and free market economy to a higher stage of development, we have to pursue developmental policy, which is transparency, sustainability, easy to understand, and systematic”.

He said told representatives of the State organizations that the policy and it’s decision is not issued based on a list of dreams, and it is not based on the corner of some officers’ views and theory; it should be discussed openly, should be discussed through multicorners, and should be based on real evidence. Therefore, we should change our thinking and attitude for the job. The Mongolian aphorism “Measure seven and cut once” has to be used more when making any decision. This should be implemented”.

Mr. Batbold also pointed out that enlisting in the Asia-pacific trade agreement will increase the list for the amount and list of exported products, and would increase Mongolian trade participation in the region and economic co-operation. It is very important for Mongolia to be established in a comfortable environment for developing its trade.
