Mongolia examines convention on refugees’ rights

On November 30, the President of Mongolia,Ts.Elbegdorj received Giuseppe de Vincentis,United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees,and regional representative for oversees affairs of Mongolia and China. “Our close cooperation with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees began in 1999. Various training and legal workshops on of Refugees was organized” said President Elbegdorj, and thanked the UN High Commissioner for Refugees for providing assistance this spring to Mongolian herders during the dzud disaster, and for improving the living conditions of border guards under the grant aid. At the same time, he mentioned examining “the issue of accession of Mongolia to the Convention on Rights of the 1951 Refugee Convention, and the Optional Protocol to the Convention in 1967”.
In response, Mr. de Vincentis noted a good level of bilateral cooperation. He said the UN Refugee agency was created in 1951 with a view to protect refugees’ rights at the international level and to solve their problems. “In 2011, the Convention on the Legal Status of Refugees of 1951 will celebrate its 60th anniversary,” said Mr. de Vincentis, and he thanked the president for carefully examining the matter of Mongolia’s accession to the Convention, reported Public Relations and Communications Division, the Office of President of Mongolia.
