Mongolia takes disaster precautions

On March 21, Deputy Prime Minister M. Enkhbold, Road, Transport,Construction and Urban Development Minister Kh. Battulga, Ulaanbaatar Mayor G. Monkhbayar and chief of National Emergency Management Agency Ts. Amgalanbayar gave reports to President Ts. Elbegdorj.The president said that along with helping others and sharing their sadness, it needs to take lessons and hold meetings frequently to discuss how we are prepared for natural calamity.

Deputy Prime Minister M.Enkhbold reported, “Mongolia’s government held meetings twice since the Japanese earthquake and appealed citizens to help the Japanese. According to the appeal, definite works have been carried-out and a certain amount of money accumulated. Government resolved to render assistance of USD1 million. In addition, total donations worth Tgs1.8 billion accumulated from 697 organizations and 314 citizens.Moreover, 5 tonnes of items mainly blankets from the government reserve were distributed to Japan at its own expense. Government also dispatched a 12-man rescue team to Japan, which conducted search work at a 1.1sq.km area of the disaster site. Japan’s Foreign Ministry expressed its thanks to our rescuers and the rescue team is now returning to Mongolia.

Mongolian airlines made seven flights in the past period, bringing 1,147 Mongolians back to their native country. A little bit of radiation was detected in the luggage of some people who came back. Relevant measures were taken to detect luggage radiation. Also, there are 35 points throughout the nation to take radiation measurements,” said Deputy Prime Minister M. Enkhbold. The president asked, “How are we prepared for natural calamity such as earthquake? At this time when people
are focusing their attention on it, we should deliver required information and improve preparations”.
Ulaanbaatar Mayor G. Monkhbayar said, “We start to make all buildings of Ulaanbaatar have passports and registration.

Also we have resolved an issue of equipment to make a safety assessment on buildings to be newly constructed. We are preparing to implement the work to discharge railway freight in two outskirts of Ulaanbaatar for security. Moreover,earthworks will be completed by this spring”. Minister Kh. Battulga said, “We do not have to be complacent and should introduce Japanese technology of constructing building. Suruga Mongol Company is introducing this technology in Ulaanbaatar. One more issue that should be in focus is cement quality. Among many kinds of cement being used for construction, German cement is known to be the best. This cement is the main standard product being used in Japan. Our ministry is collaborating with the State Property Committee to create this standard cement”.

During the meeting, an issue of shelter was also touched upon. The president said that two things are vital for citizens to know. Second, every citizen should be ready and have some food in reserve. They should be aware of what to do, how to help children, and where shelters are in case of an earthquake.

At the end of meeting, the president asked the government, relevant ministries, agencies and organizations to intensify their works concerned and satisfy integrity of activities.
