Mongolia joins EU-funded nuclear safety initiative
08 July 2011

On June 30, Mr. Khurenbaatar,Director-General for the Development Financing and Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Finance signed a Financing Agreement between the Government of Mongolia and the European Union.

Accordingly, Mongolia will be part of a 2.5 million Euro regional project that includes Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The project aims to promote a coordinated, safe and cost-effective management of legacy uranium mining and processing sites in Central Asia.

It is expected that the mechanism of regional cooperation established by this action will contribute to the achievement of major progress in the field of nuclear safety, notably:
• The establishment of a common base for the necessary legislative and regulatory framework, which will allow the homogenisation of the national specific related arrangements in the region;
• The design of a watershed monitoring system for radiological (and chemical) contaminants;
• Capacity building in the domain of analytical capabilities, including the determination of ground parameters for physical characterisation and of radionuclide concentration (alpha, beta, gamma and radon);
• Training and education in radiation protection, environmental monitoring remediation planning and techniques;
• The establishment of a web-based database where all the information related to legacy uranium sites in the countries in the region can be stored.This regional project adds to the already fruitful cooperation between the European Union (EU) and Mongolia, representing a total volume of commitments of currently more than 25 million Euro, mostly in the fields of rural development, access to basic social services and support to the small and medium-sized enterprises.

A Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) between the EU and Mongolia, covering all areas of cooperation including trade, was initialled in 2010 and is expected to be signed by the end of the year.
