99th Year of Independence
07 January 2010

On December 29, 2009, the threshold of the New Year, top state officials laid wreaths at the State Seal and President Ts. Elbegdorj visited the Bogd Khan Palace Museum where he met with scholars and historians.

On December 29, 1911, Mongolia officially declared its independence to the world after over 200 years of Manchurian colonial domination. This day, Mongolia elevated Bogd Javzandamba to the throne as the Head of State and religion, declared Ikh Khuree as the capital city, and established five ministries which covered domestic and foreign affairs, military, state treasury, and justice.

The foremost result of the national revolution was to declare national independence and form the State. Since 2001, this day has been officially marked as National Liberty Day.

During his meeting with scholars and historians, President Elbegdorj expressed agreement with their suggestion to make December 29, 1911 a day of Independence. He said, “We currently celebrate November 26 as Independence Day, the day that Mongolia proclaimed governance of a People’s Republic and adopted its first Constitution. Historical chronicles must be accurate with valuable confirmation.”

In connection with this historical day, Parliament Speaker D. Demberel told the press, “The year of 1911 was a historical year when this very significant and historical event for Mongolia took place. In general, the 20th century was full of historical achievements for Mongolians. Historical struggle for national independence and liberty was rooted on the declaration of Mongolia’s independence on December 29, 1911. Therefore, there is no way to reduce the significance of this historical struggle for national independence. Mongolians had been struggling for independence during its existence under Manchurian colonial domination for 200 years. The struggle was still
continuing into the 20th century. At that time, there were many foreign countries struggling against colonies for their independence. It was main outside factor. On the other side, the governance of Manchuria weakened. Taking that as an advantage, Mongolia’s leaders were able to
establish an independent country.”

The 100th anniversary of Independence will be marked in 2011 and former President N. Enkhbayar made a decree in 2008 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of national liberal revolution. Welcoming this anniversary, the decree stated the organization of many initiative works including the restoration of historical items and cultural heritages connected to the history of state services, take them into protection, create scientific, art and cultural works and film documentary-feature movie, organize an international scientific conference and symposium as well as create a garden in Ulaanbaatar in memory of the struggles for Mongolia’s Independence.
