State-owned universities and institutes are merged

In consideration of the government’s action plan, the cabinet made a decision to restructure universities by combining over 40 State-owned universities and institutes such as follows:

  • Ulaanbaatar University; Trade and Productions Institute and Customs and Economic Institute will be merged to the National University of Mongolia.
  • Cultural Institute, Fine Arts Institute, Cinematography Institute and Radio and Television Institute will be merged to the Culture and Arts University.
  • Constructional College in Ulaanbaatar and Technical College in Darkhan city will be merged to the Sciences and Technology University as well as merging with other institutes and branches of universities in aimags.

The Prime Minister said that merging universities is good step which will influence training quality and improve the integrity of training and scientific works. As a result of the merger, 42 universities and institutes will be decreased to 16. The measure will start beginning July 1, 2010.
