A consultative meeting entitled “Determining the role of the IAEA in fully implementing the Law on the nuclear-weapon-free status of Mongolia” was held on March 24-25 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Mongolia.

The meeting was organized to mark the 10th anniversary of the adoption of Mongolia’s law on nuclear-weapon-free status. It was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Ministry of Justice and Internal Affairs, the Office of the National Security Council, the Parliamentary Standing Committees on justice, on security and foreign policy, the Nuclear Energy Agency, the Institute of Strategic Studies, Institute for International Relations of the Academy of Sciences, the School of Foreign Service of the Mongolian State University and the IAEA experts.
The main aim of the meeting was to strengthen the nuclear-weapon-free status of Mongolia through international law, share experts’ views and experiences on improving the national legal infrastructure of the atomic and radiation safety in Mongolia in accordance with the international norms and standards, and to determine the role of the IAEA in ensuring the full implementation of the above-mentioned law.
The participants discussed the present and future of nuclear-weapon-free zones, their contribution to the global efforts to address the issues of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and other problems of the regions. The Mongolian participants emphasized that the meeting was vitally important for the country, especially in strengthening the country’s national security.
During the meeting the IAEA representatives spoke in detail about nuclear safety and security, the challenges of uranium production and exploiting nuclear energy as well as the importance of nuclear law and liability in ensuring national security.
