Mongolia’s Olympic skiers to compete in Vancouver

Mongolian athletes have participated in Winter Olympic Games 11 times beginning with Innsbruck in 1964 in the categories of crosscountry skiing, biathlon, skating and short-track.
This time, Mongolia’s athletes of cross-country skiing, short track, alpine ski and skating competed at preliminary tournaments to earn the right to participate in Vancouver, 2010. MONGOLIA BECOMES FEALAC MEMBER

Mongolia joined the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC) during the 4th forum for the FEALAC Foreign Ministers' Meeting that was held January 16-17 in Tokyo, Japan.
The FEALAC was established in 1999 with the main purpose promoting wider cooperation, mutual understanding and talks on political and economic issues among East Asian and Latin American countries. It has 33 members, of which 15 are East Asian countries and 18 - Latin America. Mongolia .... More>>
INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO HELP MONGOLIAN HERDERS

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies' Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) launched a campaign to help Mongolian herders suffering from the zud disaster (extreme cold).

The European Union welcomes the announcement on 14 January 2010, of a moratorium on the use of the death penalty in Mongolia. The EU congratulates the Mongolian President, the State Great Khural - the unicameral Parliament of Mongolia -, the Mongolian Government and the Mongolian people on this important decision. The EU encourages Mongolia to commute all existing death sentences into life sentences.

Capital punishment comes to an end in Mongolia

On January, 14, 2010 President Ts.Elbegdorj address Parliament saying that he would grant pardons for every death penalty case. Although the death penalty would still exist in Criminal Law, the President will not allow it to be implemented. According to law only the President has the right to grant a pardon for the death penalty. He explained making his decision with 8 reasons and 2 special conditions.

The total territory of Mongolia is experiencing severe coldness and snow storms along with harsh overwintering with the expectation for much colder weather. Last summer, over 70 percent of Mongolia’s territory experienced drought disaster but now 90 percent is covered with thick snow. Especially in rural areas, 10-35 cm in the steppe, 40-50 cm at the feet of mountains, 60-120 cm snowdrifts and average temperatures reacheing -32-40’C.

Mongolia and France enhance cooperation in uranium sector

President of France Nicolas Sarkozy has sent a letter to his Mongolian counterpart Tsakhia Elbegdorj in which he invites the Mongolian representatives to attend an international conference on atomic energy that is initiated by France.

Tgs100 billion in bonds for State Bank

It was resolved to release bonds worth Tgs100 billion to foster State Bank which was established on the roots of Zoos Bank.
At its plenary meeting on December 25, Parliament approved a resolution to allow the release of government bonds. The Government is authorized to issue bonds worth Tgs100 billion. Tgs324 billion to be distributed in 2010

Parliament resolved to distribute Tgs120,000 to each citizen in 2010 for a total of Tgs324 billion from the Human Development Fund which is formed with revenues from the mining sector.
In compliance with the resolution approved by parliament on December 30, the size of shares from the Human Development Fund being given to Mongolians was fixed.
